A bedroom at night. Moonlight comes through the window onto a bed. One pillow is lifted at the corner and gold light shines from under it.

She pays in gold

Leave a tooth.Wake up to gold.

$TOOTHFAIRY is a pillow with a tooth under it. Pick a tooth, slide it under, turn the light off and do not peek. In the morning there is a gold coin. You can spend it or leave it where it is, and the pile only grows if you leave it.

The pillow

Under the pillow.

Pick a tooth, slide it under the pillow and turn the light off. The night takes about eight seconds. Peek before morning and she does not come, and the tooth stays where it is. Sleep through it and there is a coin and a note. Then you decide: spend it, or leave it under there. The more you leave, the lumpier the pillow gets.

How the night works

Don't peek.

Getting the tooth under the pillow is easy. Sleeping through the night takes more discipline than it should.

  1. 01

    Pick a tooth.

Front tooth, molar, the one that fell out in an apple. Some pay better than others and nobody tells you which.

  2. 02

    Slide it under.

Under the pillow, not on it. She is particular about that. Then turn the light off.

  3. 03

    Don't peek.

She doesn't come when someone is watching. Peek and the tooth stays where it is. Sleeping is the only part you have to get right.

  4. 04

    Leave the gold.

In the morning there is a coin and a note. Spend it or leave it. The pillow only gets lumpy if you leave it.

A tooth is worth more than it was.

Delta Dental's yearly Original Tooth Fairy Poll asked 1,000 parents of kids aged 6 to 12. The average payout per lost tooth was $5.84, up 17% from $5.01 the year before. A first tooth did better, at $7.17. When the poll began in 1998 the average was $1.30. About a third of kids also got a physical gift.

A household hint, not a legend.

The oldest written mention anyone has found is a short item called "Tooth Fairy" by Lillian Brown, in the Household Hints column. It says a child scared of losing a loose tooth may agree if told about the fairy: tooth under the pillow, small gift in the morning. It suggests stocking up at the five-cent counter.

In Spain it's a mouse.

Ratoncito Pérez is the Spanish and Latin American version: a mouse who takes the tooth and leaves a gift. Luis Coloma wrote his story in 1894 for King Alfonso XIII, who had just lost a baby tooth at eight years old.

Somebody was collecting the gold.

Vancouver police said they had recovered about $12,000 worth of dental gold: fillings, crowns and bridges. Officers found it in June 2021 and think it was stolen, possibly in a break-in at a dental office. They don't know whose it is, and nobody has been charged.
